Often, spores from molds such as Stachybotrys, or black mold, become trapped within wall spaces during construction where they may lay inactive for many years.
However, accumulated moisture from flooding, leaks, or high humidity can activate these dormant spores causing mold to grow and reproduce.
Black mold reproduces by creating spores that carry harmful chemicals called mycotoxins. The spores are released into the air where they circulate and may land on household surfaces.
Mycotoxins that come into contact with our skin may cause irritation and lesions. If inhaled, these toxins travel to the lungs and infiltrate the air sacs. This inflammation makes breathing difficult and painful, a condition that is only worsened as fluid begins to accumulate. Mycotoxins that have fallen onto food products may be ingested, inflaming the entire digestive system.
Through any of these pathways, these dangerous mycotoxins may find their way to the network of blood vessels that nourish our brain. Once inside an artery they may travel out of the blood stream and enter the nervous system. These toxins affect the passage of signals between brain cells causing disruptions in thinking, memory, and movement.
Households that have been exposed to moisture should be tested for the presence of mold, and new homes should be built with appropriate measures for reducing the potential for moisture accumulation.

Hello. I’m Doctor Steve Redd with the U.S. Public Health Service assigned to CDC.
When you get ready to go home, here is some information you should know about mold.
Many people want to know how to get rid of mold. You can clean a small amount of mold yourself. Use a solution of 1 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water. That’s 1 cup of bleach – to 1 gallon of water.
Remember, never mix bleach or products containing bleach -- with ammonia -- or products containing ammonia. Read the label on any product to see what it contains.
If you see mold that covers more than 10 square feet, consider getting a professional to remove it.
How about mold and your health? Well, if you are allergic to mold, or have asthma, being around mold may make your condition worse. If you have a chronic lung condition or a weak immune system, you could develop mold infections in your lungs and you should try to avoid buildings contaminated with mold. If you think that mold is affecting your health, please see your health care provider.
In general you don’t need a protective mask, called a N95 mask, just for re-entering a building, but if you plan to clean up mold you should buy one at your local home supply store and follow instructions on the package for fitting it tightly on your face.

Eradicating Mold and Mildew
Mold is a major health risk that shouldn't be taken lightly. Beware: mold and mildew will develop quickly. In just 24-48 hours of water exposure surfaces and materials can become contaminated with mold.
